Underlayment and Ice-and-Water Shield: The Layers Under Your Shingles

The shingles get all the attention. They are what you see, what you pick a color for, and what the brochure is about. But the layers rolled out underneath them are what actually keep water out of your house on the day a shingle fails, a nail backs out, or ice backs up at the eaves. Think of the shingles as the raincoat and the underlayment as the second skin beneath it. Here is what goes under a proper roof, what each layer does, and why the low bid so often leaves it out.

Underlayment: the second line of defense

Underlayment is the layer that gets rolled out over the wood decking before a single shingle goes on. It does two jobs. During the install, it protects the exposed deck from the weather in the window between tear-off and finished roof. For the life of the roof, it is the backup, so that any water that gets past the shingles, and some always eventually does, meets a second barrier instead of the bare wood.

For years the standard was asphalt-saturated felt, the black paper you may have seen. Most quality roofs today use synthetic underlayment instead, because it is tougher, lighter, lays flatter, tears less, and sheds water better than felt, while holding up to sun and foot traffic during the install. It is not the place to save a few dollars, because it is doing quiet work the whole time the roof is up.

Ice-and-water shield: for the vulnerable spots

Ice-and-water shield is a different animal from underlayment. It is a rubberized, self-adhering, self-sealing membrane that sticks directly to the deck, and crucially it seals around the nails driven through it. That last part is what makes it special: even punctured by fasteners, it stays watertight.

Because it is more expensive than regular underlayment, it goes where the roof is most at risk rather than across the whole deck: along the eaves where ice dams back water up under the shingles, in the valleys where two slopes funnel water together, and around penetrations like chimneys, skylights, and pipes. In those specific danger zones it is the backstop that keeps ice-dam and wind-driven water from ever reaching the wood and the rooms below.

How the layers work together

A well-built roof is a system, not just a covering. The ice-and-water shield seals the highest-risk areas, the synthetic underlayment covers the rest of the deck as the second barrier, and the shingles ride on top as the primary weather layer, with flashing tying it all together at the transitions. Each layer covers for the others. Skip one and you have not just removed a feature, you have opened a gap in a system that was designed to have every part present. That is why a roof can look identical from the street and perform completely differently in a storm.

Why we do not skip it

Here is the uncomfortable truth about these layers: you cannot see them once the shingles are on, which makes them the easiest place for a low bid to quietly cut costs. Thin out the underlayment, skip the ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, and the roof looks exactly the same on install day while costing meaningfully less to build. It also fails years earlier, right at those weak points, long after the crew is gone.
